Helena De Waal (1979 - ) is a Bloemfontein-based artist, specialising in the medium of ceramics.

De Waal obtained a National Diploma in Fine Arts from the Central University of Technology, Bloemfontein in 2004, and since 2006 she has lectured Ceramics at Motheo TVET College. In 2007 De Waal received two awards at the Free State Ceramics Exhibition, for the best sculptural piece. The following year she received a first prize at the clay as canvas ceramics exhibition.

De Waal has participated in numerous exhibitions. During 2009 her work was selected for the ABSA L’Atelier Exhibition. In 2010 she was invited to participate in an exhibition held at WHAG. Additionally, De Waal has seven artworks on display as part of WHAG’s permanent collection.

She was also invited to donate a work,(2013), as part of an exhibition, Universal suffering during the South African War 1899-1902 (2013), presented by the Women’s Memorial and the South African War Museum, in Bloemfontein.

In 2014, her work was selected for the ABSA L’Atelier Exhibition, this time a Top 10 finalist. In 2015, De Waal received the Highly Commended award at the Gauteng Regional Exhibition of Ceramics South Africa. In 2016, De Waal was awarded the runner up in the Free State Phatshoane Henney, New Breed Competition. During 2017, her work was selected for Innibos National Crafters Awards. Furthermore her work was selected for the Sasol New Signature Competition, this artwork now forms part of the University of Pretoria’s art collection.
